A Stunning Renovation With Stylish Roof Top Terraces

Having travelled a lot in their lives, this Swedish couple were ready to establish some roots on the coast just west of the pretty town of Marbella, albeit as a second home. Planning to spend only about 4 or 5 weeks a year here, their budget was certainly limited. As is often the case with our projects, the clients would not be able to spend too much time on the ground here in Spain perusing and choosing so they asked the team at ProMas Building to take the project right through from planning the re-design to finishing the property with fixtures, furniture and equipment.

To help them make design choices whilst out of the country, our skilled team produced a variety of 3D images both internal and external. See example opposite.

The Brief

The brief tasked ProMas to complete a total refurbishment of the 40-year-old penthouse duplex, inside and out. Internally the décor throughout was tired, having stained marble flooring and dated kitchens and bathrooms.  The layout needed some opening up. The walls enclosing the dark kitchen were knocked down in order to create a large bright open plan living space and this area was squared off and made larger still by incorporating part of the outside patio that was already at the same level as the internal space and re-positioning the steps.  Upstairs we created a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite for the master bedroom.

Clean, Calm and Fresh

Our clients wanted a sleek clean finish, predominantly white but with an injection of colour through artwork and soft furnishings. The white high gloss flat panel kitchen set the tone for the open plan living space. Keeping the mood calm and fresh, our interior designers echoed the kitchen with a stunning oval dining table. Black velvet dining chairs added a touch of luxury.  The contemporary leather sofas with chrome legs keep the look clean yet sumptuous. To break up the monochrome background, Katherine introduced shades of amethyst, mauve and plum in the form of a Persian rug, silk cushions, vases and candles.  Bright magenta tropical flowers keep the space fun along with the client’s own artwork adding a fabulous pop of colour.

Drink In The View

Outside was dominated by old-fashioned terracotta tiles teamed with yellow paintwork.  The two terraces offer fabulous views of the locally famous mountain, La Concha, and over Marbella and the coast line beyond yet they did not offer a relaxed or private space from which to enjoy the views alfresco. The terraces extending from the living area were given an overhaul, retiled and updated into an alfresco dining area and further along the terrace, a relaxing chill out area. On the roof terrace, we designed another chill out space but this time using a combination of built-in seating and standalone furniture. The monochrome palette was continued up here and the pièce de résistance is an outside shower area surrounded by lush greenery for privacy.
